Gravesend Epilepsy Network is an independently registered charity, set up to give direct help, information and support to people with epilepsy and their families.
GEN is recognized as one of the leading epilepsy support groups in the country, and is in regular contact with many other like-minded groups around the UK. We are also in contact with International Bureau for Epilepsy, where we have been involved in many conferences around Europe. Members of the group have also given presentations to several UK conferences, as well as local organizations, including Social Services, local hospitals and the emergency services.
We have fortnightly get togethers at Riverview Park. Also social events at Age Concern. Clarence Row. Gravesend.
When epilepsy is first diagnosed it is quite shattering, not only to the individual, but also to the whole family. A driving licence is often forfeited immediately, and some leisure activities have to be curtailed. Doctors, so busy, often do not have the time to sit and explain, and this is where our trained Counsellor is available to help. She can give information regarding side effects of drugs, helping, by indicating what benefits may be applied for, and by just being there for people to talk to. She helped to set up a patients help desk at the National Hospital for Neurology in London and another at West Hill Hospital, Dartford. She is now at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford. The Epilepsy Outpatient Clinic is every 1st, 4th and 5th Wednesday of the month.
If you, or anyone you know, needs help, support or information about epilepsy please ring Susan Griffin on 01474 351673 where she will do her best to help.
